The main duty of the International/City Relations Division is to facilitate exchange with the sister cities and friendship cities of Asahikawa.

Asahikawa International Committee

The Asahikawa International Committee (AIC) was formed to promote international exchange between Asahikawa residents and international residents at the grassroots level.

Asahikawa・Bloomington・Normal Sister Cities Committee

This committee is involved with promoting sister city exchange with the cities of Bloomington/Normal, Illinois in the United States of America. Activities include exchange student programs for high school students and short-term exchange programs for middle school students. Middle school students from Japan visit the U.S. each spring, and in the summer students from the U.S. come to Japan.

Asahikawa Japan-Korea Friendship Association Office

To foster friendship and goodwill between Asahikawa and Korea, the Japan-Korea Friendship Association promotes Korean culture through a variety of initatives such as commemorative projects relating to Asahikawa's sister city, Suwon, Korean cooking classes, and culture workshops.

Asahikakawa-Harbin Friendship Association Information Counter

This office works to facilitate exchange and mutual understanding between Asahikawa and its friendship city of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province, People’s Republic of China.

A Coordinator for International Cooperation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is posted here. Aside from offering training courses for representatives from developing nations, the officer is involved in recruitment for overseas volunteer programs and youth cooperation groups, as well as staff development in northern Hokkaido through providing lectures on human resources training activities.

Language Classes

Fun Fridays

People of all ages and levels can join “Fun Fridays” and enjoy conversing in English. Through games, quizzes, etc., participants can become familiar with English and have fun. . Asahikawa Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) is available to help and facilitate English conversation. .
● Date: Afternoon Course : Every second and fourth Fridays of the month.13:30 – 14:30
    Evening Course : Every second Friday of the month.18:30 – 20:30

Japanese Language Course

★Introductory & Beginner Course
"This course is for complete beginners who know some basic Japanese greetings. Students will learn essential expressions for everyday life using cards and illustrations.
It's also suitable for those who can read and write hiragana and katakana and form simple sentences. The course covers basic grammar along with practical, everyday expressions."

Language Courses 

Courses targeting beginners looking to learn the languages spoken by Asahikawa's  sister/friendship cities . Aside from language study, participants can learn about the cultures and customs of these countries, as well as exchange views and opinions among each other.
Course dates and times will be announced accordingly. Check the "Information" section on the top of the Homepage.

Medical English Seminar

During this seminar, participants learn a variety of medical English terms, commonly used expressions in hospitals, and listening to symptoms through role play. This seminar covers basic concepts such as the most important rule of medical interpretation, which is to convey precisely what was said, no more and no less. Participants will also have the opportunity to hear from volunteers with first-hand experience. Each year, the seminar is held in line with varying themes, such that even participants who work in the medical industry will leave =the seminar= with practical and applicable takeaways.

Friendship Party

This event which brings together local and foreign international residents with the aim of deepening cross-cultural understanding. AIC volunteers lead outdoor sports and games, as well as foreign cultural activities. Every year this fun event attracts a large number of local and overseas participants.

Happy Halloween Week

・This event is an opportunity to experience the culture of Halloween. Every year on October, the International Center hosts a renown "Trick or Treat Event" where young children can enjoy the center's Halloween decoration and get some free treats by saying "Trick or Treat" at our front desk!

Cooking Class - Experience the World through Local Ingredients

A very popular event that offers the opportunity to learn about different countries through their cuisines. Experience foreign food culture and eating habits by preparing dishes and engaging in friendly conversation with local and international residents.

Japanese Culture Workshops

Events primarily aimed at international residents and students offering hands-on experience of traditional Japanese culture, such as Taiko drumming, soba making, calligraphy, etc.

JICA Asahikawa Desk

The Asahikawa International Center is also the office for JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). 
The JICA Coordinator provides a variety of services such as consultation for organizations and individuals interested in international cooperation, provide information on international/foreign talent, and education on multicultural co-existence. 
Additionally, the Asahikawa International Center also has a JICA Corner where you can find pamphlets to learn about the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers or educational resources on international understanding for class or self-study. Please come and stop by!
